Review: Heavenly by Jennifer Laurens

SYNOPSIS: I met someone who changed everything. Matthias. My autistic sister's guardian angel. Honest. Inspiring. Funny. Hot. And immortal. That was the problem. What could I do? I did what any other girl would do-I fell in love with him. Zoë's sister darts in front of cars. Her brother's a pothead. Her parents are so overwhelmed; they don't see Zoë lost in her broken life. Zoë escapes the only way she knows how: partying. Matthias, a guardian sent from Heaven, watches over Zoë's autistic sister. After Zoë is convinced he's legit, angel and lost girl come together in a love that changes destiny. But Heaven on Earth can't last forever.

REVIEW: I loved Heavenly! This book is amazing! I finished it in one sitting! It's so beautifully written! I can read it over and over again! I don't know how Jennifer did it,but it's like the book soothed and calmed me while I was at it...
I loved the way Jennifer has tied so many grave issues like drugs, autism, drinking, belief issues, etc all in a single thread and put it in fiction. This book has characters which will stay with you, make you think about them long after you have read the book! Zoe and Mtthias’s relationship was so beautifully described. Also,Zoe’s fragile family ties makes the book even more interesting to read and love. This book made me think. It’s so simply written…but it conveys so much with such a great deal of sincerity. I have to say I did not see the ending coming.
This is a serious book and if you are looking for a fun beach read, this is just not your book. But if you want a book that will linger with you,a book which will capture you in and with its essence, this is it! It is so different from so many other YAs I have read till date.

Review:So Many Boys by Suzanne Young

SYNOPSIS:Tessa goes from strawberry smoothie to suddenly single!

After her center-court split with Aiden, Tessa puts the SOS behind her. After all, cheaters never prosper! Now she’s busy working on her faux-relationship with Aiden and negotiating the unfamiliar waters of “technically single and pseudo-dating.”

Life can’t get any more dismal for a one-guy kind of girl until an imposter hijacks the SOS, and it’s up to Tessa to save her squad from slander. But with her best boy hot and cold, what’s a kitten to do?

Even worse, Tessa doesn’t realize how much she’s up against—because this copykitten is far more naughty than nice.

REVIEW:So Many Boys is the perfect sequel to The Naughty List. I really enjoyed the book. I have to say that I liked So Many Boys more than The Naughty List, though it was predictable…I mean I knew who set up the fake SOS even before I had read about 50 pages of the book.
However there is something that bothered me about the book, and that is the character of Tessa. She seemed sort of inconsistent to me. Though I did feel that she has matured in this book and I certainly like her,but she seriously lacks stability. And I fail to understand why a strong, intelligent girl like her is so hung up on her boyfriend! I am not trying to proclaim feministic ideals here but it just doesn’t seem right! And why hook up with a guy who is your ex-boyfriend?! It just seems wrong on so many levels. Well,I guess I just should not have read this book subjectively but should have looked at it from Tessa’s point of view. You cant think of a guy as your ex when you love him so much I guess.
However, all said and done,I must say that I had great fun reading this book. It is an interesting read which skillfully combines cheerleaders,spying,back-stabbing,love,friendship,animosity,betrayal and confused teenage emotions extremely well. Suzanne Young’s writing is fluid and I read the book in one sitting! She certainly is an excellent uthor.

Review: Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief

SYNOPSIS: Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he's angered a few of them. Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.
Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus's stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

MY REVIEW: It is one of the best books that I have ever read. The book starts with a bang and it picks up its pace from the very beginning and never loses it. Everything has been interestingly portrayed in the book-right from Percy’s struggle when he has first been identified as a ‘Half-Blood’,his growing friendship with Annabeth, his meetings with each of the Greek gods and his final acceptance of himself as a Hero. Every chapter has some new adventure to offer and the action never drops. The premise of Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief is his ‘quest’ for Zeus’ Lightning bolt that has been stolen and it includes several of Percy’s adventures and escapades with several ancient Greek monsters and Gods. Anyone who loves myths and legends will lap it up and I love them so I naturally enjoyed it! There is a perfect blend of magic, friendship, mystery, great characters and lots of action! After Harry Potter, this is the series that I am extremely fond of (Rowling remains my first choice though).I absolutely enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it!

Tete-a-tete with Jackson Pearce

Today I have the lovely Jackson Pearce with me! She is the author of the fabulous As You wish and Sisters Red and is already such a big name in the literary world!

Did Sisters Red or As You Wish present any special obstacles?
AS YOU WISH was tough because I hadn't published a book yet, so I wasn't very confident in my writing and had no clue if I was doing anything right. I second guessed myself every step of the way. That said, SISTERS RED was tough because it was a more complex book, and I wasn't sure I was ready for that. Each book is different-- they all have their own obstacles!

Do you have a writing ritual?
To be honest, no-- since every book is different, every writing process is different. For SISTERS RED I wrote every spare moment-- five minutes here, ten there, and it added up to a whole book. For SWEETLY, I sat down and forced myself to work for long stretches. The only constant is usually diet coke, though I've had to start limiting myself on those...ritual or not, drinking fourteen cans of diet coke in a day can't be good!

If you could meet a potential male from the literary world, who would it be?
I'd love to meet Dumbledore, from Harry Potter. He's pretty much the coolest male in the literary world, as far as I'm concerned.

If not a writer, what profession would you have pursued?
I think I would have gone into editing or agenting, something along those lines. That said, I always knew I wanted to create or perform, so maybe I'd have ended up working in the arts in some capacity.

What can we expect from you next?
My next book is SWEETLY, a companion to SISTERS RED. Here's the blurb!

Twelve years ago, Gretchen, her twin sister, and her brother went looking for a witch in the forest. They found something. Maybe it was a witch, maybe a monster, they aren’t sure—they were running too fast to tell. Either way, Gretchen’s twin sister was never seen again.

Years later, after being thrown out of their house, Gretchen and Ansel find themselves in Live Oak, South Carolina, a place on the verge of becoming a ghost town. They move in with Sophia Kelly, a young and beautiful chocolatier owner who opens not only her home, but her heart to Gretchen and Ansel.

Yet the witch isn’t gone—it’s here, lurking in the forests of Live Oak, preying on Live Oak girls every year after Sophia Kelly’s infamous chocolate festival. But Gretchen is determined to stop running from witches in the forest, and start fighting back. Alongside Samuel Reynolds, a boy as quick with a gun as he is a sarcastic remark, Gretchen digs deeper into the mystery of not only what the witch is, but how it chooses its victims. Yet the further she investigates, the more she finds herself wondering who the real monster is, and if love can be as deadly as it is beautiful.

Author Interview: JOELLE ANTHONY!

I have the superbly talented author Joelle Anthony with me today! Her book Restoring Harmony released this May 13th and it is already such a big big hit!! I am so glad Joelle could fit in the interview in her busy schedule. She is extremely sweet(as is evident from all her answers) and she loves to sleep!!
Thank you so much Joelle! This interview was so much fun!

The cliché – How did you land upon the plot of Restoring Harmony?
After reading part of James Kuntsler’s book THE LONG EMERGENCY, I had the end of oil on my mind. He believes there will be a transition period where humanity figures out how to live without it and essentially pulls themselves up by their bootstraps. He also thinks this transition period will be a time of turmoil. That interested me as a setting for a book and after a few months, I came up with my “what if” question.

What if a girl has to travel from her self-sustainable island farm in B.C. out into the real world during this transition period?

That eventually led to more questions, and then the novel.

Since Restoring Harmony is dystopic, how do you see the world 50 years from now?
I really have no idea. Part of me thinks it’s very possible that it will be a world like in Restoring Harmony, but it’s hard to say. I actually try to live my life each day and not worry about it.

Music plays such an important part in Restoring Harmony. We know your husband plays the guitar. Do you play any instrument?

I do not play an instrument. I’ve tried, but when it comes to music, I’m a better listener than player! It kind of works out well for us though because my husband can spend all day learning a new tune (which involves playing it over and over) and because of my distinct lack of musical ability to remember tunes, I don’t even notice. It’s great for him because he doesn’t have to feel like he’s driving me crazy. We’re well-matched that way. And also he’s taught me a ton about music, and can act as my expert when I’m writing and as the entertainment at my bookstore events!

Do you need a particular atmosphere for writing?
I really only need three things. Quiet. The ability to talk to myself aloud without being overheard. And a computer. I have terrible handwriting so writing longhand just doesn’t appeal to me. I have a great office with a treadmill desk (yes, a shelf built across my treadmill) and I walk and write at the same time. It’s great!

Since cooking is a passion, tell us one dish you love making and excel at. What is your favorite food?
This is a hard question because I generally just look in the fridge and throw together something out of whatever we’ve got. We don’t really buy processed food, just lots of ingredients and our pantry is full of grains and pasta and items to cook with. Then we either buy lots of veggies or if it’s in season, we eat what my husband has grown for us.

I kind of drive my husband crazy because I will make a delicious meal, then he’ll insist on writing it down, and I’ll stick it in my recipe book and never make it again. I rarely make the same dish exactly the same way twice.

As far as my favourite food goes, I love to snack. I’ve recently given up dairy because I’m lactose intolerant, so coming up with cracker spreads to replace my cheese fetish is my new passion. My favourite one so far is a handful of marinated artichoke hearts, some sundried tomatoes (in oil), fresh flat-leaf parsley, and a dollop of mayo blended in the food processor. Yum!

Other than writing, reading and cooking, what do you like to do?
I’m way into knitting and I love listening to baseball on the internet radio. I also just got a new bike (a book birthday pressie from my husband), which is so much fun to ride. And I love, love, love to sleep.

What are the best and toughest parts of being a published author?
Well, the best part is when you write, you know someone will get to read it eventually (knock on wood!). The hardest part is exactly the same thing that unpublished writers go through…the waiting. That doesn’t ever change.

What next can we expect from you?

I’m about to start editing my next book, THE RIGHT AND THE REAL, out sometime in 2012. It’s about a girl whose father gets mixed up in a cult and when she won’t join too, he kicks her out onto the street. Sounds grim, but in a way, it’s a lot like Restoring Harmony in that it’s a family story, a bit of an adventure, and I think, full of hope. It’s set in the present though, in Portland, Oregon – my hometown.

Thanks for having me!

Joëlle Anthony's young adult novel, Restoring Harmony, is a riveting tale of how a resourceful teen survives, and even finds romance, in a future world where no one is as they seem. Putnam Books for Young Readers, May 2010

Armed with only a fiddle and a keen sense of the land, Molly is the best kind of heroine–smart, feisty and courageous. Anthony writes with tenderness and imbues her story with hope. - Suzanne Selfors, author of SAVING JULIET and COFFEHOUSE ANGEL

Watch for her second novel, The Right & the Real - forthcoming, also from Putnam

Review: Restoring Harmony by Joelle Anthony

SYNOPSIS: The year is 2041, and sixteen-year-old Molly McClure has lived a relatively quiet life on an isolated farming island in Canada, but when her family fears the worst may have happened to her grandparents in the US, Molly must brave the dangerous, chaotic world left after global economic collapse—one of massive oil shortages, rampant crime, and abandoned cities.

Molly is relieved to find her grandparents alive in their Portland suburb, but they’re financially ruined and practically starving. What should’ve been a quick trip turns into a full-fledged rescue mission. And when Molly witnesses something the local crime bosses wishes she hadn’t, Molly’s only way home may be to beat them at their own game. Luckily, there’s a handsome stranger who’s willing to help.

Restoring Harmony is a riveting, fast-paced dystopian tale complete with adventure and romance that readers will devour.

MY REVIEW:
I absolutely loved Restoring Harmony!!
Molly is a strong character of independent spirit with an indomitable will. I must say that I love strong female protagonists in YAs(the whiny ones make me sick!). Spineless and backboneless girls are so not happening for me.Molly absolutely refuses to give up in even in the face of adversities,so true of the philosophy of existentialism.
Molly has an easy life which she is forced to quit temporarily as she is chosen by her family to journey across the overseas(which is very difficult in Anthony’s 2041) to get her grandparents to her island. Armed with her courage, endurance, presence of mind and ofcourse her fiddle,Molly overcomes the many problems that she faces in her ‘mission’ and succeeds in making the impossible, possible.
What I liked best about the romance between Molly and Spill was that it evolved slow and steady and not that Molly jumped on him the very first time they met, vying and dying for his attention,as is so common in so many YAs nowadays. Spill is absolutely the best a girl can get! He even learnt to play fiddle for Molly(OMG!)!
Restoring Harmony is an easy, fast paced story with just the right amount of action and romance. The characters are believable and very life-like. I wont give away anything anymore but I can say that this is a book that everyone will love! I highly recommend it. Joelle Anthony scores full marks from me!

Review:The Naughty List by Suzanne Young

SYNOPSIS:
As if being a purrfect cheerleader isn’t enough responsibility!

Tessa Crimson’s the sweet and spunky leader of the SOS (Society of Smitten Kittens), a cheer squad–turned–spy society dedicated to bringing dastardly boyfriends to justice, one cheater at a time. Boyfriend-busting wouldn’t be so bad . . . except that so far, every suspect on the Naughty List has been proven 100% guilty!

When Tessa’s own boyfriend shows up on the List, she turns her sleuthing skills on him. Is Aiden just as naughty as all the rest, or will Tessa’s sneaky ways end in catastrophe?

The Naughty List. Is your boyfriend on it?

MY REVIEW:
The Naughty List is an entertaining and easy ride into the world of cheerleaders-cum-undercover-spies. Suzanne Young is a brilliant author and I loved the way the story has been written.
Tessa is a very peppy and cute character. But I must say that I found her too perfect and a little unbelievable and ‘fake’ at the beginning but Young soon establishes the reason for her ‘prim and proper’ attitude and I found it very logical indeed. I also find it sweet that Tess refrains from cussing.
Tessa’s relationship with her boyfriend Aiden(cute name) is perfect and they are so cute together! But there is a new pair of brother and sister, the ever pleasing Christian and the scowling Chloe in the school. It is interesting to read how they affect Tess and Aiden’s relationship. Also what is interesting is that Young shows that guys are as much capable of manipulating and maneuvering as girls are!
Aiden is so sweet and so adorable…which boyfriend loves to give his girlfriend a manicure? That is so cute! He is truly the dream boyfriend! Couldn’t get enough of him!
The story is perky, fun and very well organized. I love the way Young presents her opinions about cheating, cussing,’running after guys’ and even a sensitive issue like parents’ divorce or separation and it’s effect on the children in a very uniquely peppy and cute way! This is a must read for all.
